The Botanical Institute of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Kiel University comprises eight groups whose research spans the entire field of modern plant science. The Botanical Gardens are an integral part of the institute, located directly next to the institute, as are our greenhouses. The collaborative and interdisciplinary spirit within the institute continues to be strengthened within the framework of several collaborative networks such as the Kiel Evolutionary Centre, Kiel Life Science and the recently established Kiel Plant Center which also includes plant scientists from other institutes in Kiel. The Kiel Plant Center aims to foster interaction across the plant sciences, increase the visibility of the plant science being done within the region, attract talented early-stage plant scientists to Kiel and empower the next generation of plant scientists. Our maritime location is echoed in our research with several collaborative projects being established with partners from GEOMAR.
